Mrs. Kimble Killam was born March 27, 1851 and died March 9, 1920, thus lacking but 18 days of completing 69 years. This county was her birthplace, and she has never lived out of it, with the exception of four years spent in Texas. Mary Amanda Marquart was the third child of Philip and Nancy Livingston Marquart, and is the second to depart from this life, leaving three brothers and three sisters to mourn her loss. She attended district school and Milton College and taught school for a time. She was married to Kimble Killam December 18, 1873. Eight children came to them, seven of whom survive: Mrs. Roy Mepham, Reedsburg; Mrs. Archie Cullen, Matron at county asylum; Mrs. Phil Bauer, Lima; Mrs. E. McQueen, Harmony; Rush and Mark Killam, Waupun; and Mrs. Walter Foor, California. There are fifteen grandchildren. In 1890, Mrs. Killam was baptized into the membership of the Free Will Baptist Church of North Johnstown. She attended religious services whenever possible, and always conducted them herself, every Sunday during the nine years that she was matron at the county asylum. She suffered much throughout her life from various physical ailments, but was of such a cheerful, vivacious temperament that she was the life of whatever company she was in. Her family mourn her sincerely for she was a loving mother and a companion to be desired either in joy or sorrow. The funeral was held from the home of her sister, Mrs. Wesley Winch, at 2:30 o'clock, Thursday afternoon, March 11, conducted by Rev. Wilfred Hamilton. Mr. Leslie Bennett sang some favorite hymns. Burial was at the Milton Cemetery. The pall-bearers were Dan Marquart, Ralph Marquart, Philip Winch, Clarence Newton, Leon Burdick and Philip Marquart. Mrs. Killam was well known throughout the county and was greatly respected and loved by all who knew her. She will be missed but her going is gain to her. The sympathy of the community goes out to the sorrowing family.
Kimble Killam, 87, a lifelong resident of Rock county, former superintendent of the Rock county asylum and poor farm, and father-in-law of Archie Cullen, the present superintendent of the county farm, died Tuesday afternoon in the town of Milton. He had been ill a month. Mr. Killam was superintendent of the county farm from 1900 to 1909 and under his jurisdiction the institution became a model which was patterned by other institutions of Wisconsin. Prior to his superintendency Mr. Killam was supervisor of Milton township for many years; chairman of the town board for several years; assessor in Milton township for five years; and a member of the board of trustees for the asylum for four years before he was appointed superintendent. Mr. Killam was born Jan. 18, 1849, in Milton township, the second child of Rush and Ada J. Kilmble Killam, natives of Pennsylvania. [Two or three lines of text obliterated in the filming process.] Kimble Killam, the last survivor of the five children of Rush Killam, was educated in the district schools and at Milton college. He lived on the family homestead until 1895 taking over the management at the time of his father's death [1871] and afterwards purchasing the interests of the other heirs. Later he purchased 160 acres in Lima township. In 1873 Mr. Killam was married to Amanda Marquart, daughter of pioneers who came here in 1835. Mrs. Killam died 16 years ago. Mr. Killam is survived by seven children, Mrs. Roy Mepham, Reedsburg, Mrs. Archie Cullen, Janesville, Mrs. J. P. Bauer and Mrs. E. A. McQueen, Milton; Rush P. Killam and Mark H. Killam, Waupun and Mrs. W. A. Foor, Visalia, Calif.; 18 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held the Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Killam (J. P. Bauer) farm home, Rev. T. C. Nagler officiating. Two selections were sung by a male quartet, James and Loren Shelton, Robert Randolph and Richard Babcock. Burial was in Milton, the bearers being six grandsons - Harold and Russell Bauer, Wayland and Robert Cullen, Kimble Killam and Maurice McQueen.
