Clinton D GILPIN--As president of the Beckley Perforating Company, of Garwood, Clinton D. GILPIN takes a prominent role in the industrial life of this region of New Jersey.
Mr GILPIN was born 7 June 1887, in Wayne County, Pennsylvania, son of Dr. Fletcher and Elizabeth (HOUCK) GILPIN. His father, a native of South Sterling, Pennsylvania, was graduated from Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, and practiced for fifty years at Newfoundland, Pennsylvania, until his death, 29 May 1912. He was one of the community's outstanding physicians and professional workers. The mother, Mrs. Elizabeth (HOUCK) GILPIN, was born in Monroe County, Pennsylvania, and died 30 October 1933.
Schools of Westfield, New Jersey, provided Clinton D. GILPIN's early formal education, and after graduation from high school there he became a student at Pennsylvania State College. There he received, in 1912, the degree of Bachlor of Arts in Industrial Engineering. Afterward he became associated with the Aluminum Castings Company, of Detroit, Michigan, with which he remained from 1914 to 1930. For four years he was with the Gilbert & Barker Manufacturing Company of Springfield, Massachusetts. The he came to the present company in 1924 as secretary and general manager, and in 1933 he was made its president. The Beckley Perforating Company has a history dating back to 1803, when it was established by A. J. Beckley in Meriden, Connecticut. In 1906 it removed to Garfwood, New Jersey, and Mr. Beckley, remained head of the enterprise from the beginning until 1918. Between 1918 and 1933 the company was operated by Dr. Theodore R. HARVEY, of Westfield. Mr. GILPIN came on the scene in 1924, as indicated above, and from the secretaryship and post of general manager he was advanced to president of the company in 1933. He continues in full charge down to the time of writting. The company manufactures perforated materials--metals, rubber, cellophane, plastics and others--as well as the Beckley "anthracite burner" for home installations, which functions automatically. The company is engaged one hundred percent in war work, and employs approximately fifty people. It was incorporated in 1905, and at the time of writing is in charge of a capable staff of officers. Assisting Mr. GILPIN as president are his wife, Mrs Frances (KILLAM) GILPIN, tresurer, and J Russell FREEMAN, secretary. The Beckley Perforating Service is the oldest business now operating in Garwood.
In addition to his work with this company, Mr. GILPIN takes a deep interest in community affairs. He is a member of the Keyport Yacht Club and the Lake Hopatcong Ice Yacht Club. In politics he is a Republican, and he is a member of the Congregational Church. His favorite hobby is Yachting.
Clinton D. GILPIN married 27 June 1914, Frances KILLAM, of Paupack, Pennsylvania, daughter of Benjamin F and Frances (HOLLISTER) KILLAM. They became the parents of two children: 1. Mary Elizabeth, born 19 June 1933, a graduate of Fairmont Junior College, Osmond Beach, Florida. 2. Jane Frances, born 22 May 1925, a student at Hood College, Fredrick, Maryland, at the time of writing.
