Stephen was born 14 October 1761 Uxbridge, Worcester, Massachusetts and was living in Dudley, Worcester, Massachusetts in 1790 when the census was taken. He was married 11 February 1782, in Dudley, Massachusetts to Levina NEWELL, the daughter of Daniel and Sarah (MIXER) NEWELL. She was born 1 January 1763 in Dudley and died 24 November 1805 in Dudley, Worcester Massachusetts. "He was Killed in a wheel pit" according to the Mass. Men in Rev. War in 1820.

Stephen WOOD, of Dudley. is on the list of 9 months men mustered by Thomas NEWHALL, the Muster Master for Worcester Co.; Capt. CORBEN'S company Col. DAVIS' regiment; engaged for town of Dudley; mustered July 6 1779; also, the descriptive list of men raised to serve in the Continental Army for the term of 9 months, as returned by Seth WASHBURN, Superintendent for Worcester Co.; Capt. CORBIN'S co., Col. DAVIS' regt.; æ 18 yrs.; stature, 5 ft. 9 in.; complexion light; residence, Dudley; engaged for town of Dudley; marched to Springfield 8 July 1779; reported delivered to Capt. MARSHALL; he also served in, Capt KING'S co., 10th Mass. regt.; entered service 10 July 1779; discharged 10 April 1780; term 9 months; and also, Private, capt. Lemuel CORBIN'S (Dudley) co., Col. Jacob DAVIS' regt.; service 13 days; company detached for service at Rhode Island on the alarm of 30 July, 1780.
