When the division was made of Plymouth Colony, Bristol county in 1685 had the towns of Taunton, Rehoboth, Dartmouth, Swansea, Bristol, Tiverton, Little Compton, Freetown and the plantations of Cumberland Gore and Attleboro. It was bounded on the North by Norfolk county, the east by the new Plymouth county and on the south by Buzzard's, Mount Hope, and Narraganset bays and the plantation of Roger Williams.
The plantation of Cohannet was incorporated on 3 March 1639 which was the Tetiquet Purchase (now Raynham, Berkley and Taunton).
In 1668 the North Purchase was made (now the towns of Norton, Mansfield, and Easton).
The South purchase (Dighton) was added in 1672 and then in 1680 Assonet Neck was annexed to the jurisdiction of Cohannet.
John was a surveyor of highways in Taunton MA 1653, 1658, 1666.
"Blacksmiths Cobbs of Corfe Castle, Dorsetshire England": States that John's expenses were paid by the town of Taunton MA to induce him to come to their town; for the town was in need of a blacksmith.
His arrival to America was between Dec 1651- Aug 1653. His farm was on Tremont Street in Taunton MA. In Aug 1653, he served on an inquest to determine the cause of death of a man from RI; In 1660 was a member of the Grand Inquest; and served on various juries of inquest in 1664 and 1667. On 29 Oct 1668, he was fined 20 shillings for turbulent behavior at Plymouth. On 3 June 1673 he was Constable of Taunton MA. He wills his nephew 30 acres of upland and meadow to Keep four cattle at his farm on the three mile river.
John was one of the original stockholders in the Iron Works Company of Taunton MA.
(Currency was in short supply in the colonies and no bank established until 1694, so bar iron became the circulating medium of exchange during this time period.)
In 1656, the Iron Works Company began the manufacture of iron in Taunton, MA.
Will dated 25 Nov 1690, probated 18 Nov 1691. "In this will he refers to himself as a blacksmith, being aged and attended with ye infirmities incident to old age.
