. Note:"McClurg asserts that Austin was probably on the "Mary Anne" of Yarmouth. She notes that he was examined on May 11, 1639 stating that he was "desirous to goe to Salem in the New E." Sailed from Yarmouth, England to Salem in May 1637, then to Dedham and Chelmsford, and finally to Wenham. He took the freeman's oath at Boston on 2 Jun 1641."
"Austin, like many of our relatives, did his share of public service. When he lived in Dedham, he was chosen "measure" for the town and while in Wenham he served as constable. He also served on the quarterly court jury in Salem and on the grand jury. Oddly, his wife was charged before the court for wearing a red silken hood. Her case was dismissed when Austin was able to show that he was worth more than 200 pounds. Rick Kilham feels that this was a situation similar to what we have today. Somebody is always pushing the edge of the envelope."
"Austin and his sons Daniel and John were among the 25 people who made the initial donations to create Harvard University in 1653. He was also a generous donor to the church and was on the committee chosen to build the meeting house. The meeting house was built on his land in 1660."
