Lowell died 1 January 1917 in Olalla, Kitsap, Washington.

Information from his Civil War Military records:
Lowell SHEFFER enlisted in Captain Mulford M LATIMER's Company (E.) Third Michigan Regiment of United States Volunteer Cavalry 17 November 1861. He was 26 years of age, 6 foot 1 inch, of Sallow complesion, Blue eyes, Brown Hair, occupation when enlisted farmer. During the last two months the said soldier has been unfit for duty thirty days. He is troubled with fits or spasams which attack him after exertion of any kind or loss of sleep. He is also subject to hemorage of the lungs.
Station: Benton Barracks Ft. Lewis, Missouri
Date February 14th, 1862.
I certify, that I have carefully examined the said Harvey L. SHEFFER of Captin LATIMER's Company, and find him incapable of performing the duties of a soldier because of pulmonary hemorage, occuring daily. He has been subject to bleeding from the lungs for four years and since his enlistment he is very much worse, is entirely unable to do anything.
Discharged this 17th day of July 1862, at Bnton Berracks, Ft. Lewis, Missouri.
