I certify that I have carefully examined the said John V. SHEFFER of Captain LATIMER's Company and find him incapable of performing the services of a soldier because of: Gun Shot wound of back in May last which injured his spine so as to disable him perminantly--    J. Andrews   Surgeon.

Other parts of the record say that he received the wound while atacking the enemy at Farmington Tennessee not Mississippi.

Letter from John Sheffer to Lydia Knapp

Camp near Corinth, Mississippi. May 15, 1862

Dear L,

On May 13, Sunday our company were ordered out on picket duty at a town called Farmington, four miles from camp with orders to occupy the town. When we arrived at the head quarters of the main infantry guard, a mile or more from town, there was quite sharp firing between our skirmishes and the enemy's Picket stationed at an old building a short distance beyond. The Captain, after a short conference with the officer of the Illinois Infantry determined to attempt the capture of their calvary. We went on a sharp trot through town, to the forks of the road, when the enemy left their station and spurred for their main guard, with our company in

pursuit at the top of our speed, gaining on them at every step for half a mile of more, when we were fired into by two companies of Rebel infantry who were concealed in the thick underbrush on the right hand side of the road, sending a perfect storm of buck shot across the road. About twenty of our men followed the Captain through the fire, returning the fire to the best of our ability with our carbines. We lost one man Austin Reed killed and, three, including myself, wounded. My wound was the most dangerous, though it is doing well and I am now entirely out of danger at present, with the prospect of being fit for duty in a short time. The shot struck me in the back, just above the joint of the hip and now lies just under the backbone in such a position that it is impossible to extract it. The wound seems to be healing rapidly. Ezra Bertram of Rome, had the hair shaved clean from his head from a ball, and one lodged in his hip, which he picked out with his fingers, nothing serious. Hiram Baker of Wolf Creek had his collar bone fractured by stopping to fire his carbine. One of the boys run against him, knocking his horse from under him. In the thickest of the firing Geo Burwell's horse was struck by a ball through the head killing him and making Geo do some extraordinary tall walking. We expected to see him no more but in about an hour after our return he came into camp. He was fired at so close that the powder burnt into his hands and neck quite freely.

I have very good care and attention and am doing better than could have been expected after having to ride seven or eight miles back to camp. I can now walk carefully around camp and shall be out in a few days. I do not want you to worry about it. You will probably hear exaggerated stories about the affair, for there are some who like to make the most of a small affair.

It is impossible for anyone to get here who does not belong to the army as there is a heavy battle expected here daily and all passing on the river is prohibited except such as cannot be avoided, no citizen being allowed to pass.
