Sarah A. was born September 1825 in Shanando, , New York. She married first a Mr. BROWNOLD and second 1 January 1854 Eleazer Ketchum McLOUTH the son of William Wells McLOUTH and Betsey KETCHUM. He was born 30 October 1816 in Galon, Wayne, New York, and died 26 August 1890 in Casco Twp.,, Allegan, Michigan. She died 10 Nov 1910 in Allegan county, Michigan. At the age of 83 years, 4 months, 8 days.
Eleazer Ketchum McLOUTH was the oldest 14 of the family of William Wells McLOUTH and Betsey KETCHEM. He was born 30 October 1816 at Galen, Wayne, New York, and came to Michigan with his parents in 1835. In 1853 or 1854 he migrated to western Michigan and bought 80 acres of land, the W half of the NW ¼ section 18, Casco Twp, (Town 1S Range 16W) Allegan Co. for which he paid $30 in Gold. The land was purchased from Timothy McDOWELL who held several sections which he had bought from the government. The land was all in timber; beach and maple. Mother lived with the McDOWELL's family while father chopped and cleared a place large enough for building a shanty. In that place all of the children but Elva, the youngest, were born. In about the second year, I think, father got a piece of steel in his eye, from which he lost the sight of that eye, and a little later the other became affected so that thesight was always very poor. He was entirely blind when he died.
My father was very particular with whatever he undertook to do, it was always done well and never had to be done again. If anything was supposed to be straight, it was straight. He was noted for his honesty and moral character. He was a great reasoner and quite a Bible student. People came often for advice. He would never assert anything of which he was positive and never spoke unfavorable of people. If persons treated him trickily he would never have anything more to do with them; just let them entirely alone.
He was fond of music and a good singer, also he was somewhat skilled with the violin. I remember that at one time he taught vocal music at the school house, and he taught me to read music. He was justice of the peace and I remember that when a young girl, I saw him Marry several couples. He held various town offices at different times. He seemed to have quite a good education. I do not know where he got it; I only know that, as we grew up and went to school he could always help us out of difficulties.
Father was much interested in fruit. He planted the first peach orchard in Allegan County, and the first large apple orchard. At one time his apple orchard was the best in the county. He had some of the fruits of all discriptions and took great pride in having the best but at that time there was no accessable market, no place, transportation being poor, so his time and energy were largely wasted. There are still in this place, which remains my home 1922, some apple trees that he planted.
In the yard by the house is a black walnut tree. The largest on record at Lansing, which he selected and guarded while it was young on account of its erect and sturdy growth. It started about 65 years ago from a nut that had been carried by squirrels under the brush fence built when the clearing was made. By this tree he lined his entire orchard.
Father had learned the Jewler's trade and within my memory he worked during the winter for a firm in South Haven, walking six miles to the place. He also repaired watches and clocks for people at home so long as his sight permitted such occupation. He was not very successful financially; a large family and poor eyesight hindered greatly. Before his death he sold the east half of the farm. The house that he built burned in 1914 but another was built on the same foundation.
January 1, 1854, he was married to Sarah A SHEFFER (Brownold), who survived him by about 20 years. He died August 26, 1890 and was buried in West Casco (McDOWELL) Cemetery, which adjouns the farm on the west, This cemetery he had added in platting, and as sexton dug the first grave and many others there. Mother is also buried by him there.
Mary A. (McLOUTH) TRIGG.She married 1st Mr. BROWNOLD and nothing more is known of this marriage.
