BIG THOMPSON CANYON FLOOD LARIMER COUNTY, COLORADO 31 JULY 1976

"It was a beautiful summer Saturday in Northern Colorado, as thousands of residents and tourists visited beautiful Estes Park, to begin a weekend of fun. It was Colorado's Centennial Weekend, but nobody could have imagined what Mother Nature had in store for those unlucky enough to be traveling the canyon that evening.

By late afternoon, a few sprinkles began to fall over the Colorado Rockies; by dusk, huge thunderheads had begun to form and soon soared 12 miles, over 60,000 feet, into the atmosphere. At 7:35 p.m. the first signs of the impending disaster emerged when the National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning. By this time most of the park's visitors had begun the drive down the canyon towards Loveland and most of the canyon's residents were enjoying the Summer Olympics from Montreal on television.

At 9:00 p.m. the National Weather Service issued a more urgent warning for everyone in the canyon to expect flooding. For most, this warning was too late. Over 11 inches of rain, a once-in-a-century downpour, fell in 4 hours. The narrow canyon funneled the deluge into a wall of water nearly 20 feet high. For many, there was nowhere to run and tragedy was the result.

139 are known to have died that night, and 88 people were injured. 7 victims have never been located. The flood destroyed 316 homes, 45 mobile homes and 52 businesses. 73 mobile homes suffered major damage.

Victims of the Big Thompson Flood."
