"Robert Pease probably lived and certainly died in Great Baddow, where he was buried April 16, 1623, leaving a widow Margaret and several children. The following is a record of his children as taken from the parish register. His marriage is not entered, and it is to be inferred that his wife was a resident of an adjoining parish." Robert made his will May 10, 1613, and it was proven June 12, 1623, two months after his death. In it he named his wife, Maragaret, sons Robert and John, his daughter Elizabeth and her husband Abraham Page. The family continued to live in Great Baddow for another ten years.
PEASE, PEAS, Margaret, widow, Salem, memb. chh. 1639; will dated 1 (7) 1642, prob. 1 (11, 1645; beq. to grandchild John, son of her son Robert Pease, and to Faith Barber. [Court Files I, 35.] She seems to have married Francis Weston, and to have been called "Pease" again after his death.
NOTE: She was not married to WESTON - this was her son John's mother-in-law.
She must have come to Salem a short time after her sons, Robert and John, arrived, and perhaps brought with her, Robert's wife and their other children. She was the widow Pease who joined the First Church at Salem 1639.
Apparently, she was later married to Francis Weston before 3 Nov 1635 when her son was brought before the General Court, although there is some question as to the identity of Mrs. Weston with the widow Margaret Pease of Salem. It was ordered that "John Peas shall be whipped and bound to his good behavior for striking his mother, Mrs. Weston, and deriding of her and other evil carriages." Francis and Margaret got into trouble with the church in Salem, and apparently moved to Providence RI, where Francis Weston was one of the twelve persons to whom Roger Williams deeded land on 3 Oct 1639. In 1639 he was one of the 12 original members of the First Baptist Church in Providence. In Jan 1643, Francis and others bought land in Warwick, and was living there in 1643, when he and others were summoned to Boston to appear at the General Court there. They refused to appear and soldiers were sent to Warwick to arrest the leading men of the settlement. John Pease apparently had word of the impending attack, and went to Warwick to "declare unto his father, out of his tenderness toward him, of the nearness of the soldiers." Francis and others were captured and carried off to Boston. He was sentenced to hard labor and imprisoned at Dorchester. He was finally released in 1645, but had died by June of that year of consumption. There is no mention in the records about the fate of Francis's wife. It may have been this Mrs. Weston who Roger William's alluded to in a letter dated 1651 in a letter to the town of Providence: "she is a distracted woman... take what is left of hers into your hands, and appoint some to order it for her supply." If Williams is referring to the widow of Francis Weston here, she could not have been our Margaret Pease who died in Salem in 1644.
NOTE: She was not married to WESTON - this was her son John's mother-in-law.
