Garrett was born 18 December 1798 Coxsackie, Green, New York the son of Richard (Dirk) HOUGHTALLING and Nancy (Antje) VAN DER KARRE when they lived in New York they used their Dutch names Dirk and Antje but when they moved to Michigan they anglecized their names to Richard and Nancy respectively.

Garrett married first 6 November 1820 in Livonia, Wayne, Michigan Lydia GATES. She was born 6 June 1800 in Albany County, New York and died 19 July 1835 in Lyon Twp. Oakland, Michigan.

After her death he married second 15 October 1835 in Lyon Twp. Oakland, Michigan Rachel THOMPSON the daugter of Moses THOMPSON and Margaret MORRIS Rachel was born 21 August 1803 in New Jersey and died 27 January 1867 in Howell, Livingston, Michigan.

She married second 1 December 1847 in Cohoctah, Livingston, Michigan, Alva PRESTON, Garrett having died 21 August 1845 in Howell, Livingston, Michigan.

New York sold some land in Nankin Township Wayne Co., Michigan, in 1826
