He married 10 August 1783 in Kinderhook, Columbia, New York, Antje (Nancy) VAN DER KARRE the daughter of Johannes VAN DER KARRE and Hilletje VAN DER ZEE. Nancy was born 11 May 1766 and christened 1 May 1766 in Claverack, Columbia, New York, and died 3 April 1853 in Michigan. When they lived in New York they went by their Dutch names Dirk and Antje but when they moved to Michigan they used the English forms Richard and Nancy. The lived in Livonia, Wayne, Michigan. and Richard died 18 June 1834 in Wayne County, Michigan.
