There is some confusion as to the father of Benoni, Jr. Some genealogists have surmized that Benoni was actually the child of Stephen Griffin, elder brother of Benoni, who drowned just prior to the birth of Benoni Jr. With careful consideration, my Great Aunt Myrtie, a descendant of Benoni Griffin Sr., feels that this idea is hog-wash. I, too, had questioned the assumption that DeLacey was married first to Stephen, for why would she have TWO daughters named Martha (one born 1737, the other born 1757) as Great Aunt Mrytie writes, "...both healthy women to grow up and have families."
Great Aunt Myrtie, in a letter dated 21 December 1977, writes: "Benoni Jr. born early 1743 was stated by Mary de Lacey to be the 1st of "13 children she bore to Benoni Griffin her Husband" [this was entered by James Owen (or John?) Registrar on the town meeting books at Mary de Lacey's request]."
Later in the letter Great Aunt Myrtie injects: "Other women had their children listed as well. Perhaps it was the unrest of the Revolution and the burning of homes that gave them the idea? Perhaps it was taking pages of from family Bibles to establish rights to pensions or land benefits?

She passed along her name by naming her daughter Martha, and her son Viets Griffin. The other son was Benoni.
Her father, Benoni Viets was the adopted son of Dr. Viets. His real mother was Margaret Wilcoxson, who bore him out of wedlock at a very young age, and died soon after. Benoni Viets was a blacksmith and a horse trader.
The Wilcoxson family (Wilcox today) came to Boston, May 26, 1635, on the ship PLANTER. Some Dodge ancestors, the Tuttles were on the same ship.
Martha's mother was Martha Moore. Through the Moores and the people they married, we can find kings and queens of England, and of Europe, leading back to William the Conqueror of Normandy who invaded England in 1040 A.D. and on back to Charlemagne, King of the Franks.
