ELK RAPIDS - Martha Ruth Lundy (Cogshall), 90, of Elk Rapids and Traverse City, passed away Monday.
Born Sept. 4, 1909, in South Haven, she was the daughter of Frederick and Ruth Cogshall. Martha spent her childhood in South Haven. She graduated from University of Michigan in 1930 with a BA degree and received her master's degree in 1931. Martha was a member of Zata Tau Alpha.
Martha taught in public school at Camden-Frontier and St. Johns. She was hired in her first teaching position because she could also coach basketball. She married Harold "Red" Lundy on Aug. 17, 1940, a Dodge dealer and a tool and die manufacturer, who died in 1987. They resided in St. Johns.
Music was a very large part of her life. She was a lifelong piano player and teacher, organist at several churches in St. Johns and a choir member in St. Johns and Ormond Beach, Fla., where she spent many winters in retirement with her husband, Red. Since 1991, Martha received care at Bortz Health Care in Traverse City, where she continued to play the piano.
Martha was a golfer, lifeguard, swimming instructor, and an avid sports fan, especially for the University of Michigan teams. Other interests included playing bridge, which she and her husband did with their many friends in St. Johns "dinner club."
Martha is survived by three sons, Charles (Barb) Lundy of Xenia, Ohio, Douglas (Cathy) Lundy of Traverse City and Robert Lundy of East Lansing. She dearly loved her grandchildren, Nicole and Matt, and was so pleased that Nicole follows her in her love of music, and Matt is a "M Go Blue" fan. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Emory "Skip" (Theresa) Lundy of Kewadin; sister-in-law, Jennie Johnson of South Haven; childhood friend and sister-in-law, Lauretta Lundy of Corvallis, Ore.; and cousin, R. S. Griffin of South Haven.
Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Friday at the Elk Rapid Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes, 312 Pine St., Elk Rapids. Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at Maple Grove Cemetery in Elk Rapids.
The family suggests memorial contributions to First United Methodist Church of St. Johns, First United Methodist Church of Ormond Beach, Fla. or the Martha Lundy endowed scholarship at Interlochen Center for the Arts in Interlochen.
