Joseph was born 8 January 1832 in Stroud, Gloucestershire, England, and married 28 June 1854 in Sheboygan, Sheboygan, Wisconsin, Harriet F WILLIAMS. She was born about 1834 in Pennsylvania He died 7 May 1916 in Grand Rapids, Kent, Michigan.

Information from a piece of paper in Grandpa's (Robin Gae Richard Forrest's) things and a letter to my mother from my grandfather's cousin giving a pedigree and sketch on the Fisher Family. State that Joseph G has a brother Chauncy H. I can find no record of him in England . they also mention no wifes name for Joseph but mention his children Mrs. Wenifred FULLER/TULLER; Mrs Cora DOLAN; Frank Joseph and wife Augusta V.; Also Leo; and Alfred W. and his daughter Faith. all of Grand Rapids Michigan. There is no mention of how Leo and Alfred W. are related excpt that they are brothers of Joseph. But which Joseph? since there are three generations of Joseph FISHERS

FISHER, J. Gurner, artist, was born at Stroud, England, Jan.8 1832, son of Joseph N. and Esther (GURNER) FISHER. He came to America with his father in 1846 and settled at Two Rivers, Wisc. His talent for drawing and his esthetic scense both were manifestcwhen a young boy. He always wanted to be an artist. External circumstances and conditions and the environment of the Wisconsin woods, however, led him into other channels. In 1864 he removed to Grand Rapids Michigan. From time to time he employedhis spare moments doing charcoal work, but it was not until late in life that he became a professional artist. 1n 1888 he made a trip to New York city, and through the influence of A. Augustus HEALY, president of the Museum of the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences, his work was exibited in the great galleries, where it met with that recognition which previously had been withheld. Upon returning to Grand Rapidshe relinquished all other work and devoted himself entirely to art. His subjects are of great variety, and in landscapes atmospheric effects are andled with great artistic feeling and execution. While his work in charcoal is unique, he did not confine his talent exclusively in black and white, but showed many gems in oil, in which he inclined to grays and msticism, somewhat after Corot. He was not schooled in the ordinary sence of the term, as his only teachers were Nature and the works of the great masters sown in the art galleries of New York and Chicgo. In his charcoals he displays a strong originality which distingushes them at once from the work of any other artist. They are unusual in composition and treatment, and full of expression. The leading critics of the metropolis selected them for favorable comment upon their initial appearance in a general exibition in New York. It is probably the subtlety of expression and boldness of treatment combined with a certain individual element that makes them valuable. He had an original method of working out color effects. He first made a sketch in charcoal and from that secured his idea of light and shade. His effects of sky, of cloud, of perspective, andof atmosphere, are excedling fine, and they contain also much beautiful sentiment. The versatility shown in his drewings is extraordinary. With him as with the great landscape painters of France during the last century, recognition came later, yet competant critics feel thet his work will stand up well in the anuals of American art. Personally, he displayed many amiable elements of character. These permitted even casual observatons of his life were always impressed with its beautiful, affectinate simplicity, and a modisty which at times seemed too great. He was president of the Grand Rapids Art Association. He was married at Sheboygan Wis., June 28, 1854, to Harriet WILLIAMS, by whom he is survived, with three children, Winifred, wife of Sherman TULLER; Cora, wife of Charles DOLAN; ane Frank J. FISHER. He died at Grend Rapids, Nich., May 7, 1916.
