Relatives and friends were grieved to learn of the death of Mrs. Charles Phelen, which occurred at her home Friday morning, September 29, 1944, at 9:00 o'clock. Flora Almira (Forbes) Phelen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Forbes was born September 4, 1866 at Farmington, Ills. She had been in failing health for several weeks, but had been much improved several days before her death. She lived during her early childhood in Illinois, later coming to Nebraska with her parents and attended the public schools in this county, later attending Campbell university at Holton, Kans.
Mr. Forbes, was a real early settler of Tecumseh, operated a hotel for a time, later being associated with the later Dr. P. V. R. Dafoe in the drug business there, and finally operating a photograph gallery.
On November 26, 1891, she was united in marriage to Charles Phelen of Elk Creek. They made their home on a farm, one and one-half miles northeast of town, where they resided until two years ago when they moved to town.
The deceased was a member of the Methodist church for over fifty years. She was a faithful member, devoting time and efforts toward the benefits of the church. She is survived by her husband, one daughter, Lucy, (wife of Frank Meeboer) of Laramie, Wyo.; one sister, Mrs. J. L. McBrien of Ponca City, Okla., and one brother Arthur E. Forbes of Dastrop, Texas.
The funeral services were held at the Methodist church Sunday afternoon with Rev. E. P. Booher and Rev. Ethel Schaar in charge. The floral offerings were both numerous and beautiful. The burial was at Mount Hope cemetery.
Relatives and friends from a distance attending the funeral included, Mrs. McBrien of Ponca City, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Meeboer of Laramie, Mr. and Mrs. George Casford of Stella, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hickey of Plattsmouth, Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Boston of Omaha, Byron Phelen, Mrs. and Mrs. John Whitlock and Mr. and Mrs. John Fink, of Tecumseh; Mr. and Mrs. Spencer Bates and Murrey Bates of Lincoln and Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Mattox of Graf
Charles Andrew Phelen died Wednesday, December 25, 1968, in Laramie, Wyo., at the age of 101 years, seven months and eight days. Charles Phelen was born May 17, 1867, to Andrew and Berlinza (Clark) Phelen of Elk Creek. He was the last of a family of 13. He had always lived near Elk Creek with the exception of one year spent in Missouri, until 1956 when he moved to Laramie, Wyo., to make his home with his daughter.
Mr. Phelen and Miss Flora Forbes of Tecumseh were united in marriage November 26, 1891, in Tecumseh. One child was born to the union. The decedent served as postmaster at Elk Creek during the 1890's. Since that time he was engaged in farming until his retirement when they moved to town in the spring of 1942. His wife preceded him in death September 29, 1944.
The decedent had devoted many years of church work to the Elk Creek Methodist Church, having helped build the church and being the oldest member of the church at the time of his death.
A survivor is his daughter, Mrs. Lucy Meeboer of Laramie, Wyo.
Services were held in the Methodist Church in Elk Creek with Rev. Allan W. Martin, pastor of the Tecumseh Methodist Church officiating. Pallbearers were Guy Eversole, Thomas Robison, A.J. Damm, James Robison, Delbert Hecht and Raymond Hoke. Interment was in the Mt. Hope Cemetery near Elk Creek.
Arrangements were made by Beethe Funeral Home of Elk Creek.
