Information about Dr. Jerome Napoleon BettesBorn: November 19, 1832 in Brighton, Ontario, Canada
Died: December 20, 1895
Married: Ruth Electa Loomis
Ruth was born in 1838. She died in 1924 at their Ortega home in Jacksonville. They are both buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Jacksonville, FL.
After completing the course of study in the Brighton Public Schools, he began the study of medicine in the office of a Dr. Fife of Brighton, where he is said to have remained for six years. He then entered the Eclectric College of Medicine in Cincinnati, OH, from which he graduated in 1857. Over the next 13 years, he practiced in several places, including his home town of Brighton, Clinton, OH, and other places in the Great Lakes area.
He moved to Jacksonville in 1870, where he resumed practice and continued until his death. He also operated an apothecary shop in connection with his office at 62 Liberty Street. Dr. Bettes and his family were early settlers of Jacksonville, having located here about the same time as the forebearers of the Stockton family. The original Stockton business was a newspaper and bookshop. Dr. Bettes won the affection of the citizens of Jacksonville for his gallant service during the Yellow Fever epidemic of 1888, when he gave freely of his professional skills at great risk to his own health. Dr. Bettes and Ruth are buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Jacksonville.
Dr. Bettes and Ruth had six children.
Fred Arthur born July 14, 1860 in Bloomington, IN and died February 19, 1940. Charles Chester born March 1, 1863 in Brighton, Ontario, and died November 17, 1916. William Lyman born April 7, 1865 in Buffalo, NY and died September 7, 1892. Emily "Daisy" born May 16, 1868 in Fulton, IL and died June 6, 1945. Margaret Louise "Maggie" born April 22, 1871 in Jacksonville. Jerome Napoleon Jr. born 1873 in Jacksonville and died December 2, 1888.
Fred married Lula Marion Nessler on January 1, 1886. Fred decided at an early age to leave home and seek employment where he could enjoy his love for growing plants and trees. Around 1878, most of the Citrus Industry was located along the St. Johns River from Jacksonville and south, probably due to the availability of river transportation. Fred was employed by orange growers in the Tocoi area and helped with the cultivation of the groves. Also, being an experienced sailor like his brother Will, he transported the fruit upriver by sailboat to the Port of Jacksonville where ot was sold for shipment to the North. It was his ambition to own his own grove, and his first property was purchased near Tocoi in 1884. In the meantime, he met Lula Marion Nessler who was teaching school in the area. Their first three children, Jerome N. (died as an infant) born October 8, 1887 and died July 19, 1888, Irene Julia born January 14, 1889 and died at age 102, and George B. born August 13, 1890 and died October 6, 1949. About 1890, Fred bought property six miles south of St. Augustine where he built a home and started orange groves and a vegeBETTES farm. Seven more children were born there; Ruth Louise born September 20, 1892, Fredric R. born March 30, 1894 and died August 14, 1957, * Hiram N. born February 11, 1896 and died June 8, 1970, Melvin born September 15, 1897 and died September 14, 1930, Marion Loomis born February 21, 1899 and died June 30, 1949, Lula Meredith born December 3, 1901 and died June 14, 1983, William Arthur born December 27, 1905 and died January 11, 1986. The Ponce DeLeon, completed in 1887, Alcazar and other large hotels were popular in those days. Fred Bettes' grove was one of the attractions visited by tourists, brought out by horse-drawn carriages. Lula was born on January 15, 1863 and died August 2, 1941.
* Hiram's two sons, Harry and Earl, ran the fruit stand on San Marco Boulevard in St. Auguctine. They are both dead (1998) and Earl's wife now runs the stand in a different place.
William Lyman was known to be an avid sailor (one trophy still survives) and was apparently on his way to a successful career in government, having been selected Jacksonville's City Treasurer, before his death at age 27. William is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Jacksonville.

I am Laura James Bettes Schomberg. I was married to William Worth Schomberg, Jr. My son who is mistakenly listed as my husband is James Bettes Schomberg.
