66. Samuel Benjamin CHAFFEY (Samuel3, Benjamin2, Richard1). Born on 21 Apr 1826 in Chaffey’s Mills, Muskoka, Ontario, Canada. Samuel Benjamin died 25 January 1893 in Novar, Muskoka, Ontario, Canada; he was 66.
Samuel lost his father when he was only 14 months old. Later his mother remarried but his new father soon died. He became a surrogate son of Benjamin TETT who may have set Samuel up with a milling business in the Rideay Canal area. This mill operated at least until 1870 and later was known as Hoggs Mill. 33
He moved fron Newboro and settled first in Glenelg township, Grey County. In an 1865 Directory of Grey County Samuel Benjamin CHAFFEY is described as running a Sawmill on the Saugeen River, north east of Durham. He was also an assistant Reeve and Magistrate in the township, and his property was located in consession 3, lot 28. the 1881 census of Canada lists his occupation as druggist.
On 14 Nov 1849 when Samuel Benjamin was 23, he married Mary Elizabeth KILBORN, the daughter of Lieutenant Colonel John KILBORN and Elizabeth BALDWIN, in Newboro, Ontario, Canada. She was Born 27 August 1829 in Brockville, Ontario, Canada and died in Huntsville, Muskoka, Ontario, Canada, in 1894 at the age of 64. She was buried in Locks Cemetery, Huntsville.
Her parents both died in Novar, Ontario just north of Huntsville where they are buried. Her father was born in Augusta Township in 1793. He was a Quartermaster during the war of 1812. When the war was over, he married and went into business as a general merchant. Soon, the KILBORNS moved to Newboro where they were neighbors of Benjamin TETT. John became involved in the lumber industry with his own mill (Crosby Mill) close to Bedford Mills. After a decade, he sold his mill to John CHAFFEY (b. 1820). 34
