John was born about 1642 and married 17 March 1674 in Norwalk, Fairfield, Connecticut, Elizabeth SMITH, the daughter of Richard SMITH and Bathsheba ROGERS. She was born about 1650 in Norwalk, New London, Connecticut and died after 3 April 1741 in Norwalk, Fairfield, Connecticut. John died before November 1720 in Norwalk, Fairfield, Connecticut.

It is uncertain if Richard Smith's wife was in fact a woman by the name of Bathsheba Rogers. It Is possible however, so I have left her personal info intact. No proof has yet been found to connect our Richard Smith to this Bathsheba Rogers, so I have deleted her supposed ancestry from this genealogy until some reliable evidence is uncovered." --

I agree with Ralph Roberts so do not make a page for Richard SMITH untill the correct Richard is found. [RF].

John was probably born before his father went to Southold, as the fact that he was of full age before 20 Jan 1665/66, is indicated by the following vote:

        "At the towne meeting held the 20th of Jan. 1665, grante unto
   John Whitne the sonne of Henry Whitney. . . . . oinse unto his
   father's home lott extending from the. . . . . .Brow of the hill
   lying by the hi. . . weigh leading to the. . . . . Rodds. . . . 
   cartpath by the sayd Falls."

He settled, with his father in Norwalk, followed his business of millwright and miller, and then succeeded him in possession of the mill and homestead.
