Jan was christened 18 June 1580 in St. Walburgis, Antwerp, Belgium and married about 1600 in Amsterdam, Noord Holland, Netherlands, Annetje JANS. She was born about 1682 in Amsterdam, Noord Holland, Netherlands. and died. Jans died aftrer 1636 in Amsterdam, Noord Holland, Netherlands.
Jan was a merchant of Amsterdam with ties to the Dutch East Indies Company. He was in London as a merchant 1601/2. In 1633 he was listed as a "Hatter" in a court document that included a reference to his son Cornelius and Cornelius's wife Lyntje Michelse. This family was NOT related to the family of painters.
The family left Cologne before the city was taken by the Spanish in 1559. They initially settled in Antwerp, where Jan Mathijs was baptized at St Walburgis on 18 June, 1580. When Antwerp fell to the Spanish in 1585, the family moved north to Amsterdam. It is not known whether Matthys Jans was born in England or Holland, however his sister was baptized in Holland in 1606.
