Her husband took part in the Black Hawk War, taking his turn in Springville standing guard to keep the settlers alert for Indian attacks. Near the end of the second year's absence, another freighter came through with the news that Horace was alive, and would soon be home. When he returned he built a home for his family in which they lived for 20 years. There place became a stopping off place for many relatives and friends whom retold tales of Eliza Janes's gracious hospitallity, friendliness and thoughtfulness.
