Elmer TAYLOR

Elmer TAYLOR, bishop of the Juab Ward (Juab Stake), Juab county, Utah, was born at Grafton, Lorain, Ohio, 4 November 1831, the son of Benjamin F. TAYLOR and Ann MENNELL. With his parents he settled at Ramus, near Carthage, Hancock, Illinois, in 1842. He became well acquainted with the prophet Joseph SMITH and at one time slept in Hyrum SMITH's barn, and passed through the mobbings incident to those days, having joined the Church in 1844. He was baptized in Macedonia, Hancock, Illinois, and imigrated with his prents to Utah in 1850 in the William WALL company. In 1851 he accompanied Elders Amasa M. LYMAN and Charles C. RICH to California and thus became one of the founders of San Bernardino. His family lived in a brush shanty untill he built one of adobes, the first adobe house in that place. While thare he hauled logs from the near by canyons, did mason work on other homes, made adobes in El Monte, worked in the vineyards, and helped build a sawmill and grist mill. He afterwards procured a team and freighted merchandise and lumber between San Bernardino and Los Angeles. In the Spring of 1855 he went witrh Mattison WELSH, Isaac YAGER, and Martin TAYLOR to the Kearns mines. They had a pack train of eight mules and one saddle horse and expected to stay all summer; but finding little gold they sold their outfit and started for home. Wandering from their course, they nearly parished for want of water but finally reached San Bernardino.

Having rented his farm, Elmer decided to visit his old home in Utah. He started on 18 April 1855, six days after returning from the mines. His family accompanied him. In the autumn he returned to California and durng the winter continued freighting. In that occupation and in farming he spent two successful years. When the San Bernardino colony was broken up he returned to Utah arriving in December 1857. He made a short stay in Ceder City before continuing to Springville where he remained until 1858 when he moved to Beaver. There he farmed and engaged in the lumbering business until fall when he again returned to California. He and his brother Martin bought and operated a sawmill during the winter and the next year purchased and brought to Utah a band of California horses. He continued freighting between Utah and California until 1866. In 1866-1867 he filled a mission to Great Btittin. In the spring of 1868 he moved to Levan, Juab county, where he subsequently acted as Bishop for seven years. Thence he moved to Juab and presided as Bishop there about three years and resigned on account of falling health. He located temporarily in Salt Lake City in the summer of 1895, but removed in the fall to his old home at Juab and worked several weeks in the Manti Temple. He died 26 April 1896 at Juab. Before passing away he called his family together and exorted them to keep the faith. Bishop TAYLOR married first Wealthy Ann SPAFFORD, daughter of Horace SPAFFORD and Martha STYLES, 14 December 1850, she being born 31 October 1831. He married second Elizabeth JENNINGS on 4 October 1861. Bishop TAYLOR was a farmer and merchant during most of his life and held many responsible positions of a secular nature at different times. He was the father of fifteen children.
