The immigrant ancestor of the WAITE family, spelled Wait in Groton, MA records, was JOHN WAITE, son of SAMUEL WAITE, of Wethersfield, Essexshire, England, who married MARY WARD, prob. dau. of Rev. John and Susanna Ward of Havenhill, Suffolkshire, England. They were parents of 9 children, of whom at least four came to New England.
JOHN WAITE, born about 1618 in England, came about 1638, perhaps on the "Susan and Ellen", and settled on the 'Mystic Side', which became Malden, MA in 1649, where he purchased a house and land in 1644. He was made a 'freeman' in 1647, the same year he joined the Charlestown, MA church. He wrote one of the 'booke of laws' for the Massachusetts colony in 1648. He was active in religious and civil affairs, serving as Capt. of the Train band, Commissioner to 'end small causes', 18 years in the House of Deputies, and Speaker of the House until he lost his sight in late life and 'retired from public life.'
He died Sept. 26, 1693, age 75. His first marriage took place in England, to MARY HILLS, daughter of Joseph and Rose Hills, who came on the "Susan and Ellen" in 1638. She died at Malden, Nov. 25, 1674. He married again, Aug. 4, 1675 to SARAH (________) PARKER, widow of JACOB PARKER of Chelmsford, who died Jan. 13, 1707/8, age 81. She was the mother of one of his son's wives. By Mary, 10 children, 5 boys and 5 girls were born. It is from their youngest son, NATHANIEL WAITE, born May 27, 1667, Malden, MA, died about 1714, that the Groton branch of the family came. Nathaniel married ELIZABETH LYNDE, daughter of John and Mary Lynde, who was living in 1734..
