Prentiss David Gormley

MAUMEE, Ohio --
Prentiss David Gormley, 84, passed away Thursday, June 17, 2004, at St. Luke's Hospital in Maumee, Ohio.

Prentiss was born Nov. 10, 1919, in Metamora, Ohio. He was a general contractor and owner of Gormley Builders. Many homes in the greater Metamora area were built by him. Prentiss was a World War II veteran, serving as a Carpenters Mate First Class from 1942-1945 on the battleship USS Pennsylvania, Pacific Theater. He was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two bronze stars, Captain's Meritorious -- eight battle stars; and the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon. He was a member of the VFW Post #8598 in Swanton, Ohio; American Legion Post #479 in Swanton; and a life member of the Disabled American Veterans.

Prentiss was a highly respected and loved man. Friends and family of all ages stopped by his wood shop in the backyard where he spent his retirement years crafting many unique items.

He is survived by his loving wife, Louise Cartwright Gormley; children, Sandra Gee (Larry) Dunbar of Metamora; Michael (Colleen) Gormley of Pensacola, Fla.; David (Elizabeth) Gormley of Delta, Ohio; stepchildren, Mary Ann (Harry) Hueston of Canyon, Texas; Molly (Tom) Hill of Painesville, Ohio; Sally Poorman of Metamora; Michael (Susan) Malone of Indian River, Mich.; sisters, Meredyth Gobba of Mission, Texas, and Joanna Lancaster of Clinton, Mich.; 18 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his first wife, Dorothy Lassey Gormley; infant twin sons, David and Daniel; and a granddaughter, Julie.

Visitation will be Friday, June 18, from 2 to 9 p.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home, 415 E. Main St., Metamora, Ohio, which Prentiss built in 1967. Funeral services will be at the funeral home at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 19. Following cremation, there will be a private burial in Amboy Township Cemetery, Metamora.

Memorials may be made to the Metamora-Amboy Volunteer Fire Department.
