He was living in Toledo, Lucas, Ohio, at the time of his mother's death. LaVern died 25 May 1940, in Los Angeles County, California.

An examination of unusual importance is being considered today before Justice Ed Smith in Clinton. Lavern Larzelere is charged with perjury in swearing that Nor (sic) Cooley was 18 years old of age (sic) when he procured a marriage license a short time ago. The couple were married and now the girl's mother makes a protest, saying she was only 17. Clinton is all stirred up over the matter, as all parties are quite well-known in the village.

The case of perjury against Lavern Larzelere of Clinton has been dismissed. He was accused of falsifying a marriage license application by claiming his bride, young Nora Cooley, was 18 years of age when she was but 17. The prosecutor has learned that young Larzelere did not know the girl's true age, but took her word that she had passed her 18th birthday.
