In 1779, King's District was a part of Albany County, New York, out of which were formed the present-day towns of Canaan and Lebanon, Columbia Co., New York. There are 728 names on this list, (not in alphabetical order) who paid an average 20 percent tax rate. Question marks are placed where the handwriting is difficult to read or totally illegible on my copy and indicates my best guess as to the spelling of the name (about 1/4th of the names were partially or totally illegible). Although the caption says "Dollars," the taxes were calculated using the British denomination of pounds, shillings and pence. The original list has three columns for each amount, which was awkward to reproduce here, so pounds, shillings and pence are separated by periods in the table.
Interestingly, a number of the surnames on this list, i.e. Bunce, Chapman, Griswold, Hyatt, Potter, Reynolds, Sears, Warner, etc., reappear in later years in the early history of Yates County, New York. See my Index to S.C. Cleveland's History and Directory of Yates County, New York.
