Built historic Cove Fort and is grandfather of current President Gordon B. Hinckley of The Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Ira left his home in Coalville, UT, in 1867 for his new assignment, his family to come later. Tradesmen from central Utah settlements worked together, along with Hinckley to construct the fort in seven months. The fort bustled with activity for years. Daily, two stagecoaches arrived with a variety of weary travelers who were anxious for rest and food. On the many trips of President Brigham Young back and forth from Salt Lake City to St. George and the southern settlements, Cove Fort was always a stopping place. The kitchen and dining room were bustling with activity. It was not unusual for Mrs. Hinckley to feed 75 people daily. Cowboys tended to the church's tithing herds and a blacksmith was kept busy reshoeing the horses and oxen of travelers and repairing wagon wheels. With a telegraph office at the fort and the Pony Express riders passing through, news of the great, growing West kept the Hinckleys from feeling isolated.
The fort served an important function for nearly twenty years, but as times changed, so did the need for the fort. After 1900, the Church sold it to a private owner and in 1989 the Hinckley family purchased the fort and made a gift of it to the Church as a historic site. Shortly thereafter efforts were begun to restore the fort to it's original condition. In 1994 President Gordon B. Hinckley dedicated the Historic Cove Fort Complex. Visitors are welcome free of charge.

Ira Nathaniel Hinckley (October 30, 1828 – April 10, 1904) was an early Mormon leader who supervised the construction and maintenance of Cove Fort, a strategically-placed fortification located about half-way between Salt Lake City and St. George, Utah. He was the father of author Bryant S. Hinckley and Mormon apostle Alonzo A. Hinckley, as well as the grandfather of Mormon church president Gordon B. Hinckley, and an acquaintance of Joseph Smith Jr[1]
Hinckley was born in Bastard Township, Leeds County, Upper Canada. He joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in 1844.
In 1867, Hinckley was living on his farm in Coalville, Utah Territory, when Brigham Young asked him to build a fortified way station at Cove Creek. Hinckley left for the area within days. The fort was restored in the early 1990s.[2]
Hinckley practiced plural marriage. He was married to four wives, but never more than three at one time: Eliza Jane Evans, Adelaide Cameron Noble, her sister Angeline Wilcox Noble, and Margaret Harley, who was 31 years his junior. Hinckley was the father of 21 children. The last born, a daughter of Margaret Harley who was born when Ira was 61, never got to meet her father until she was almost two years old because he was afraid to visit the house and be arrested for cohabitation. Hinckley ultimately was arrested and fined $200.
